Luetkemeyer: Feds Back Off Crippling Accounting Regulation on Career Centers

In a victory for Missouri’s school districts and their affiliated career centers, U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) today announced that the U.S. Education Department has notified Missouri superintendents that they will not be required to undergo the costly and burdensome process of changing their accounting practices in order to continue being eligible for Title IV federal financial aid.

As a longtime supporter of local control in our schools and a staunch opponent of the government’s interference in our daily lives, I am greatly bothered by the federal Department of Education’s confusing, costly and totally unnecessary requirement to compel affected Missouri school districts to convert their entire accounting systems.

Luetkemeyer Votes to Extend for One Year Current Interest Rates on Student Loans

U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) today voted in favor of H.R. 4628, the Interest Rate Reduction Act, to extend current interest rates on student loans for one year. This bill will prevent interest rates from increasing on July 1, 2012, from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent on new federally subsidized Stafford Loans to undergraduate students. In 2007, Congress enacted a law that would double student loan interest rates starting in 2012.

Luetkemeyer Meets with Education Chief, Seeks Fix to Career Center Accounting Requirement

With as many as 29 Missouri school districts and their affiliated career centers facing the threat of higher costs due to confusing, unnecessary federal accounting requirements, U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) met face-to-face this week with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and called for a “complete fix” to the requirement that would compel entire school districts to convert their entire accounting systems because of an affiliated career center.
