U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) is encouraging families in the 9th District to make their voices heard through the America Speaking Out website on the issue of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

“By keeping the lines of communication open between members of Congress and the people that hired us, we can make things better despite differences of opinion. At the end of the day, we must all work together to make our country a better place for ourselves, our families and our children and grandchildren,” Luetkemeyer said. “I encourage people to speak out on their thoughts about a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.”

America Speaking Out will engage American families on the issue of a Balanced Budget Amendment, securing ideas to the problems facing our country and finding the best solutions to addressing those problems. Luetkemeyer is an original cosponsor of H.J. Res. 1, a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  The amendment, if passed, would prohibit the federal government from spending more than it takes in.  Specifically, it would prohibit outlays from exceeding receipts, limit total outlays for any fiscal year to 18 percent of the economic output of the United States, require a three-fifths majority vote in Congress to increase the public debt limit, direct the president to submit a balanced budget to Congress annually and require a two-thirds majority in Congress for any tax increase.

A Balanced Budget Amendment was one of the first pieces of legislation Luetkemeyer cosponsored after coming to Congress in 2009, and he has been pushing for its passage ever since. Luetkemeyer is also a member of the Balanced Budget Amendment Caucus, a group of lawmakers dedicated to advancing the measure in Washington.
