Luetkemeyer Thanks and Honors Our Nation's Veterans for Their Selfless Service

As we prepare to observe Veterans Day, it is important to remember that not only are we celebrating the bravery and sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform, but, we also have an opportunity to embrace the history of our great nation.

U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) issued the following statement in honor of Veterans Day:

“As we prepare to observe Veterans Day, it is important to remember that not only are we celebrating the bravery and sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform, but, we also have an opportunity to embrace the history of our great nation. In fact, the history of Veterans Day itself tells us a lot about our country’s commitment to our fighting men and women. In 1938, legislation was passed marking November 11 as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. Following the devastation of World War II and the deadly battles of the Korean War, our veterans service organizations pressed Congress in 1954 to successfully amend the Act of 1938 by striking out the word ‘Armistice’ and inserting the word ‘Veterans.’ The history of this important day is tied closely to who we are as a nation today. It developed from the tragedy of war but has grown into a celebration of those who swear an oath to defend our nation from our enemies. I encourage you to thank a veteran for their service and dedication to the defense of our nation for it is they who have protected our nation and our freedoms.”
