Luetkemeyer: Government Must Remember Our Constitution Begins ‘We The People'

As we mark Constitution Day and reflect on the rights and freedoms enshrined in this document, it is important to remember that our government, as Abraham Lincoln once said, is of the people, by the people and for the people. There is a reason why the words ‘We The People' are written larger than any others on the U.S. Constitution, and it has become increasingly clear that more and more Americans are embracing that notion at a time when government appears to be ignoring those precious words and the ideal behind them.

U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) issued the following statement commemorating Constitution Day:

“As we mark Constitution Day and reflect on the rights and freedoms enshrined in this document, it is important to remember that our government, as Abraham Lincoln once said, is of the people, by the people and for the people. There is a reason why the words ‘We The People’ are written larger than any others on the U.S. Constitution, and it has become increasingly clear that more and more Americans are embracing that notion at a time when government appears to be ignoring those precious words and the ideal behind them. Millions of Americans are making it clear that our government is of the people, by the people and for the people, and not for politicians they have elected to represent them. For more than 200 years, our Constitution has been a beacon of democratic ideals, and we must remain vigilant in protecting the rights and freedoms guaranteed by this revered document.”

Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.
