“As someone who has benefitted from a strong rural education and who hears from rural educators all the time, I have always believed that our rural kids deserve the same opportunities as other students,” said Luetkemeyer, a small farmer who grew up and still lives in rural St. Elizabeth, Mo. “I am honored to receive this award and look forward to continuing to work on behalf of our rural students to ensure they receive the best education possible.”

As member of the House Rural Education Caucus, Luetkemeyer was specifically recognized for his support of the Investment in Rural After-School Programs Act of 2009, a bill that would help improve educational opportunities for rural students across the country.

“You have been chosen for this award because of your outstanding leadership, extraordinary commitment and vigorous support for helping children in rural America,” said Charles MacCormack, president and CEO for Save the Children. “You have worked in many ways and on many different legislative initiatives that help children. You have been a consistent champion for children in rural areas of America, and have provided strong leadership in support of the unique needs of children.”

Luetkemeyer will receive the award later this evening in Washington, D.C., at an event marking the kick-off of the eighth annual Save the Children Advocacy Day
