Luetkemeyer Votes to Shield Taxpayers from Subsidizing Union Activities

Reflecting the wishes of the American people through the website YouCut, U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-9) today voted to save hard-working Americans $120 million a year with the potential savings of $1.2 billion over 10 years by shielding taxpayers from subsidizing union activities.

“Taxpayers are speaking loudly and demanding that their elected representatives take a serious stand against reckless spending and growing debt, and the last thing folks want is their government paying millions of dollars to help subsidize the union activities of federal employees,” Luetkemeyer said. “Now that the people have spoken, their elected representatives have a duty to listen and that’s exactly what I am doing by voting in favor of this YouCut proposal.”

Currently, some federal employees spend up to 100 percent of their workweek doing work for their union, while being paid by taxpayers. This proposal would prevent federal employees from participating in union activities during their official time. Specifically, today’s YouCut proposal introduced on the House floor has the potential to save taxpayers $120 million a year and $1.2 billion over ten years.

On the YouCut website each week, Americans have the opportunity to vote on a spending cut and shortly after all the ideas are processed, Luetkemeyer and his colleagues will seek a vote on the most popular spending cut. Luetkemeyer is encouraging folks to visit http://republicanwhip.house.gov/YouCut/and help Washington get government spending under control.
