WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03) questioned Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra in a full House Financial Services Hearing about the Director’s refusal to meet personally with industry stakeholders, the Bureau’s failure to follow proper rulemaking procedures, and the Bureau’s efforts to enforce non-enforceable terms like “junk fees” in its regulation.

Representative Luetkemeyer: Director, you’ve clearly chosen to regulate by press release, guidance, and the threat of enforcement action instead of through rulemaking governed by the Administrative Procedures Act. As you know, the APA allows for public notice-and-comment on proposed rules which gives regulative entities the opportunity to provide feedback and ensure their concerns are incorporated in agencies rules in order to produce workable policies.
