It’s a moment millions of veterans face at some point. After 25 years in the United States Air Force, Mike Hunsberger was ready to retire and take on the next phase of life. With plenty left in the tank and an enduring call to service, Mike considered how he might help other veterans and his St. Charles community.  

“Early into my military career, I got some bad financial advice, and it really opened my eyes to a big problem. Service members often aren’t aware of what they can do to manage their money. That can cause big headaches when they get closer to retirement,” Mike said. “I’ve always enjoyed financial planning for myself, my friends, and my family, so I just expanded that to include my community.” 

In 2021, immediately upon retiring from the Air Force, Mike opened Next Mission Financial Planning. He began working with senior military members and military retirees in eastern Missouri and has since expanded to serve clients across the country. He helps veterans save, invest, and take full advantage of their benefits. 

Thanks to the Air Force, Mike was qualified and prepared to choose between multiple career paths. He spent time working in communications and cybersecurity, gaining highly sought-after skills but said his time leading other airmen makes the most impact on his job today.  

“The leadership skills I learned in the Air Force prepared me to be a small business owner,” Mike said. “When others are looking to you for direction, you have to be a self-starter and do whatever it takes to find solutions. That kind of pressure and responsibility transfers naturally to running a business, as I’m sure other entrepreneurs would agree.” 

He recommends other small business owners get plugged into a community of their own. Whether they are veterans, have a local chamber, or fit in with a specific trade group, the support, guidance, and networking are critical to sustaining and growing a business.  

This Veterans Day, we honor and express our deep gratitude to the brave men and women who have served our nation with unwavering dedication and sacrifice. Millions of veterans return home to continue serving their communities as small business owners. I’m proud to work with my colleagues on the House Small Business Committee and the Financial Services Committee to ensure entrepreneurs and veterans like Mike have the support they deserve.
